In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His life was pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was to tend to his herd of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Tales of wolves read more prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
